How long will federer play
Wimbledon was the initial first super step, if you like. As you can see, it was a struggle for me and putting in extra effort all the time, especially when things get difficult against Felix in Halle or today against Hurkacz. I knew it was going to be really hard, to be honest. Now I just got not to feel rushed by you guys journalists or anybody else, for that matter. I got to take my time, take the right decision, the one decision I want to take and where I feel most comfortable.
The goal is to play, of course. The facts : Federer underwent two surgeries in and had a long journey before he played again on the tour in March of I was hoping for faster recovery, to be honest. It was a long, hard road. I said it many times before, I actually kind of enjoyed it. It was always uphill.
As slow as it was, it was always moving forward. Then the goal is to be able to start running again. From then on it starts to do side-to-side stuff. Much is likely to depend on his overall fitness and the state of his right knee in particular. It might not be until he starts competing again in January that he has a better idea of how his body will be holding up. If everything is going well, Federer might decide to keep his options open until next summer.
Playing a light clay-court schedule — perhaps no other tournaments at all in the build-up to the French Open — could leave him fresh enough to play at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, with even Halle thrown in as a warm-up tournament on grass. Wimbledon, of course, would be the perfect stage on which to bow out. It has always been the tournament that has meant the most to Federer.
And if he had the audacity to win the title there for the ninth time, might he decide there and then to call it a day? After all, one of his idols, Pete Sampras, won the title in his very last tournament, the US Open.
When he decided that he had finally to address his eroding knee, he never imagined it would take so long for him to compete again. I was down. This is a moment when you question everything a little bit more.
Each flight, practice, and lengthy match will tell what his knee can handle and how long his career can endure. And so Federer returns to competition playing the long game. If his knee allows him to, Federer will continue to hope more success is possible, particularly on grass. His first steps back into competition coincide with the loss of another of his treasured records. Should Nadal win there again, their tie will be broken.
Fed may decide anything anytime for any reason. Albert, well said! Roger always said, if Mirka is done travelling then I will pack it in. And yes, he has been very thoughtful and careful with his planned comeback. I agree with everything you said. Interesting that it is his knees that end it all probably. He is so loved everywhere.
Basel will be his last tournament, I hope he can compete in Wimbledon before that. Happy 40th birthday, Roger Federer! Looking forward to his return, whether in New York or elsewhere. I believe Roger knows he will never win another major. Perhaps Nadal and Djokovic will not either. There are many young strong players and I think all of the big 3 are in a rapid state of decline. They seem as injury prone as Roger is at 39 yrs old.
I do not see any of the current younger players winning 20 majors as these 3 gentleman did. Does it matter so much for fans, that Federer is Swiss? Where come most of Federer fans from? Not from Switzerland. Fed is not a God in Switzerland just like Thiem is not in Austria. These are both ski countries and tennis is not very popular.
Does it matter so much for Canadians? He lives in Canada and is Canadian citizen because living as tennis pro in Israel would make him hard to advance.
He would need first to go through military service. So Canada is his country of choice. If it makes sense to promote Shapo as Canadier? Do you promote Federer because he is Swiss?
No, you do, because he is Federer. The same with Shapo. I believe, Shapo will find his way to beat Big3 before they disappear but he misses somehow winning ability against them — maybe some weakness under pressure and missing experience?
But some in his age have better H2H records against Big3. Still he has better H2H against upcoming top — Zverev, Tsitsipas. Medvedev, Rublev. This is promising, because Big3 are going to fall very soon — Fed is sadly just done, Nadal is the next follower, Djoker can start falling next year.
