How long rick grimes was in coma

He was a respected sheriff in a small town named Cynthiana in Kentucky. In the pilot episode of the television series The Walking Dead, Rick with Shane are seen engaged in shooting. It can be noticed that whilst shooting, Rick is shot by a person in the shoulder, and at that instant, he loses his consciousness. Rick, being the main character, is in a coma before the setting of the show. The series began not with a zombie apocalyptic outbreak but with Rick coming out of his comatose state.

Rick waking up from the coma was one of the best ways for the series to jump straight into the story of a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies. Rick stays in hospital for about 4 to 5 weeks which can be easily determined by the length of his beard and the completely dried flowers on his table.

Also, while Rick was in a coma, he did not die of dehydration even though his IV bag was empty as the world was in the apocalyptic setting. His duration in the coma of being several weeks long is also justified by the conditions of the desiccated and decomposed bodies lying in and around the hospital he was admitted in.

At the end of the first season, a flashback reveals that Shane Jon Bernthal left Rick behind as chaos erupted in the hospital. When the power went out, Shane checked for a heartbeat but had to run away once walkers and soldiers started showing up.

About a month later, Rick came out of his coma and found himself alone. Surviving that long without food and water is unlikely, especially in his state. That meant someone had to be checking on him regularly. Paul ends up injured, and the couple finds their way into Harrison Memorial Hospital, seeking medical supplies. Rick was horrified to discover that the city of Atlanta had fallen into chaos and zombies were everywhere.

His wife and son had already evacuated and fled the area with a group of survivors. After a chance encounter with Morgan Lennie James , Rick set off to find his family.

In that short amount of time, civilization had already collapsed as a result of the zombie outbreak. The webisode revealed that Dr. Macones stayed at the hospital when the zombie apocalypse occurred and refused to abandon her duties to the patients.

Unlike the situation with Fear the Waking Dead , the point of the series was never to show how it all started, but to begin with a person who was suddenly thrust into the middle of it all.
