However, wolves commonly scavenge animals killed during harsh winters, locating animals buried under snow drifts by scent. Their powerful jaws help them consume frozen meat. In order to kill adult moose and other prey animals, wolves must work together.

Hunting success varies with geography and season, but most hunting attempts are unsuccessful. Long-term studies conducted in Alaska tell us that hunting techniques are passed down from more experienced family members, lending certain packs particular hunting techniques that help increase their success according to which and how many prey species inhabit their territory.

Hunting and trapping pressures that disrupt wolf packs by killing most or all of the adult members reduces the likelihood that these techniques are taught to younger wolves within the pack. This is likely part of the reason that certain wolf packs begin to prey upon livestock, which are generally much easier to hunt than more widespread and vigilant wild prey. Wolves rely on many senses to communicate with family members as well as with other wolf packs.

Although wolves whimper, bark, growl and yip, howling is perhaps their most infamous method of communication. Noted wolf biologist, L. Mech stated that wolves are capable of hearing sounds as much as 10 km away in forested habitat, and even further in open tundra.

They howl in obvious pain and distress while still alive in traps or snares, and so do any other family members on the scene who might be trying to help them. In Algonquin Provincial Park, the stronghold of eastern wolves, over , people from around the world have participated in the free Public Wolf Howl program held in the park every August.

The social nature of wolves is also evident when observing body posturing that emphasizes certain coat colour patterns. Keep low, be silent. Settle into your senses and pay attention to everything you can see, hear, and smell as the sun rises.

If you find a spot you feel good about, sit there and wait and watch until the sun is fully risen. Then come back to the same area again the next day or the next week and do the same thing until you know that area well enough to know for sure if wolves are there. So much of what we know about the land and other creatures is defined by experts who act as intermediaries between us and our own homes and neighbours.

By working to build our own relationships with these places and animals, we can gain an understanding that is far truer, and that gives us the strength to act in their defense. But we've heard tell of interesting wolf sightings happening as far South along the escarpment corridor as St Catherine's, so get looking! I was walking through the Humber River Park in the late morning with my baby in a stroller and my 90 pound labradoodle a big dog. Right in the middle of the park, and luckily for me the first and only residential exit until the Queensway, a coyote jumped on the path.

I stopped and observed, but the coyote did not move. Instinctively, I turned around and did what one should never do — run. I ran all the way to the residential area, looking back a few times to see the coyote chasing me. As soon as I got further into the residential area, I no longer saw the coyote.

Never in my life had I had such an encounter at this park and I have lived in this area my entire life. The coyotes are getting more desperate and vicious because I had a huge dog and a big stroller with me. Several residents in my area have also had encounters. Some have been chased by a few coyotes at one time, all the way to their houses.

Residents including myself called and reported this information to the city, but the employee over the phone kept on referring to my incident as a sighting. I repeatedly stated it was not a sighting but an encounter that could have gone terribly wrong.
